Fowler's ascent bodes well for golf's future - SFGate

More than four months later, an enduring image lingers from the Match Play Championship: Rickie Fowler suddenly turning into Ben Crenshaw , right there on our own public course. Fowler poured home three sizable putts in rapid-fire succession at Harding Park - 16 feet, 18 feet, 31 feet - late in his match against Shane Lowry. Those clutch putts propelled Fowler to the weekend at Harding, where he lost to Louis Oosthuizen. Those putts also came to mind Monday, when Fowler again got hot on the greens and snatched his third victory since his visit to San Francisco. He won the Players Championship the week after Match Play, added the Scottish Open in July and then toppled Henrik Stenson on Labor Day to win the PGA Tour playoff event outside Boston. Really good. Jordan Spieth , Rory McIlroy and Jason Day have hogged the headlines this summer, and rightly so. Spieth stitched together a transcendent run at the Grand Slam, McIlroy (then the world’s No. 1 player) tore up his ankle playing soccer and Day... All three are accomplished and intriguing 20-something players. their presence bodes well for the game’s future, no question. So does Fowler’s, in a different and more captivating way. He attracts more young fans than any player on the landscape, and those are the fans who really matter in the post-Tiger Woods era. Woods brought new spectators into the mix, including a younger demographic, but few golfers today command the kids’ attention. Spieth is the youngest of the headliners, but he’s an old soul and not especially dynamic. McIlroy and Day bring some charisma, but they don’t entirely resonate among fans in the U. S. , given their backgrounds in Northern Ireland and Australia, respectively. But if Fowler can wedge himself into the picture, and stretch the “ Big Three ” into the “Big Four,” then the next 15 years could be even more fun to watch. And don’t underestimate the power of youth, with whom Fowler - given his motocross upbringing, bright-colored clothes and flat-brimmed cap - clearly connects. Joe Skovron, the only caddie Fowler has had since he turned pro in 2009, witnesses this all the time. “Everywhere you go, you see kids who really respond to him,” Skovron said at Harding. One example: My 15-year-old son is not a skater, but he likes golf and absolutely loves Fowler. He was as excited about Monday’s win as he was disappointed in May, when Fowler was eliminated from Match Play before he could watch him in person at Harding. Those four short months ago, it was fair to question whether Fowler’s record ever would catch his popularity. He had only one PGA Tour victory at the time, in 135 starts (Match Play made 136). Now he’s cranking out wins against elite fields, with three in his past 10 starts worldwide. On that spring day in San Francisco, when asked what had changed in Fowler’s game, Skovron mentioned his pace. Fowler, 26, always played like a kid in a hurry, but now he’s blending a need for speed with strategic contemplation. “He slowed down a little bit,” Skovron said. “He was always a really fast player, and occasionally that almost hurts you out here - you get a little too fast. He started processing things more. Process this: Fowler now stands No. 5 in the world ranking, behind Spieth, McIlroy, Day and Bubba Watson. Briefly: Stanford’s Maverick McNealy is among the 10 U. S. players who will face a team of amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup this weekend in England. The Evian Championship, the LPGA’s final major of the year, begins Thursday in France. … The entry deadline for the 62nd Northern California Family Golf Tournament is next Tuesday.
